NEGRAR IN VALPOLICELLA . The village of Negrar covers an area of around 40sq km and, despite the heavy urbanisation favoured by its magnificent position, it still preserves many of its original rural features.
Above the hilly zones that enclose the valley it is not hard to find small isolated hamlets characterised by stone buildings immersed in pretty woodland. Many natural elements coexist harmoniously with those linked to the hand of man: cultivated fields fenced off by the "marogne", dry-stone walls, are mingled in with portions of more wilder, green areas rich in springs which show how the Valpolicella was when Man was only a guest in this land. Monuments and churches to visit The growing importance of Negrar may be tracked through the centuries through its artistic and architectural historical records. There are many impressive buildings in Negrar, especially from the Romanesque period. Worth seeing is the finely decorated bell tower on the parish church of San Martino (which how now been designated the head church of the area) and the churches of San Vito, San Peretto, Arbizzano and Torbe.
The many Veneto villas in the area are also important architectural records covering the period from the 14th to the 18th centuries. These include Villa Rizzardi with its atmospheric gardens, Villa La Sorte in San Peretto, Villa Mosconi in Novare and the medieval and mighty Villa Salvaterra in Prun.
. The Sacro Cuore Hospital The village of Negrar, centre of Valpolicella and famous for its excellent wines, it is also known for the Sacro Cuore Hospital. The hospital was founded in 1922 thank to don Giovanni Calabria, appointed Saint in 1999; the hospital is today one of the most important health centre nationwide. The hospital is located in the centre of Negrar, 1 kilometre far from Corte Spinosa farm house, easily reachable by walking for few minutes.
